Building a homepage that explains itself
The one question a homepage has to answer
A visitor lands on your homepage with one question: what does this business do, and is it for me? If they have to scroll and guess, most of them leave before they find out. A homepage that explains itself answers that question in the first screen, before anyone scrolls. What the first screen needs
Keep it to three things:- A headline that says what you do, in plain words. Not a slogan that only makes sense once you already know the business.
- A sentence that says who it’s for, or what problem it solves.
- One clear next step: a button, a form, a phone number. One, not four competing for attention.
- If someone can screenshot just that first screen and a stranger understands the business from it, you’ve done the hard part.
